Eyewitnesses to the incident on Green Lane at 7.10am said they saw the BMW M4 clip a curb, smash through a dry stone wall and land upside down on the front garden of one of the houses.

Flying chunks of rocks caused structural damage to the property, hitting the walls, roof and windows, as well as the car, front door, garage and bedroom window of the house next door. One neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said she awoke to an “almighty crash and cloud of smoke”.

She said the occupants were “lucky to be alive”, adding: “It was horrific. It was just horrible.”

The male driver, 44, of Congleton, was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving and was taken to Stepping Hill Hospital with broken bones in his lower back and bruising to his head.

Both passengers were taken to Wythenshawe Hospital, with the woman being taken by road and a 23-year-old man by air ambulance.

The injuries of all three casualties were not believed to be life threatening or life changing.

June Wherry, of Green Lane, said she was “in shock” after waking up to flashing lights and emergency services outside her home.
