MORE Derbyshire families are leading healthier lives after they received text messages from health chiefs as part of a ground-breaking trial.

NHS Derbyshire County sent the texts between February and July this year in a £10,000 drive to boost health.

The messages prompted parents and children to get more active and eat better.

A survey has revealed nearly 80 per cent of parents said the texts were the best way to get details about local exercise schemes while many families had used the messages to find information such as nutritional guidance.

Jane Hicken, of NHS Derbyshire County, said: “We’re absolutely delighted with the results of this survey, which demonstrate the power of texts in the fight against obesity.”

Parents received messages such as ‘it’s not far, ditch the car’ and they were sent texts with links to websites with healthy recipes.

NHS Derbyshire County said it will look at more ways of using text messages to encourage families to lead healthier lives.

The body has put together a full report of the five-month trial for the Department of Health.
