WOULD-BE Alan Sugars and budding Deborah Meadens impressed shoppers at a pioneering business event last week.

Entrepreneurial school students flocked to the North Derbyshire Young Enterprise Trade Fair at Chesterfield Market on Thursday to promote and sell a selection of innovative services and products – ranging from customised clothing to video production and educational jigsaws – while competing for the titles of best product, best trade stand and most innovative company.

Under long-running charity Young Enterprise, aimed at forging links between schools and industry, the talented students have been able to set up businesses then develop, produce and sell merchandise.

During the six-hour trade fair, Titan, from Brookfield Community School, showed off a selection of eye-catching woollen cases, hand-knitted by members of a sewing club in Chesterfield.

Titan’s managing director Molly O’Donoghue (17) explained: “We believe in locally made and unique designs to brighten up people’s favourite gadgets, be it an iPhone, a Blackberry or a Kindle

“We work in partnership with members of the Chesterfield Ladies’ Sewing Club - they’re a great bunch of people who enjoy knitting these beautiful cases.”

Meanwhile, Localed, from Tupton Hall School, sold a range of sweet-smelling scented candles in a variety of aromas like mimosa and camomile.

“We’ve had a good response. A lot of people have bought the candles, which is great,” said Localed’s Managing Director Liam Hall (17).

“The business event offered invaluable experience, improving and developing our skills in communication, sales and marketing.”

Chesterfield’s mayor and mayoress, Keith and Pat Morgan, Chris Sellars, from Banner Jones Solicitors, and Kevin Walker, of Bitz ‘n’ Pc’z Ltd, judged the trade fair.

The best product, best trade stand and most innovative company winners will be announced at the Young Enterprise Area Final at the Winding Wheel in Chesterfield in April.
