St John the Baptist Church, Staveley, opened its doors on Saturday, September 14, as part of The National Heritage Weekend.
The refreshments, cakes, jams, preserves and bric-a-brac stall proved to be very popular, keeping the stallholders very busy.
Exhibitions of photographs, kindly loaned by Mr David Matthews, depicting scenes of Old Staveley and surrounding areas were very popular.
A display covering the Markham Colliery Cage Disaster of 1973 created much interest and discussion. This display was mounted with the help of Chesterfield Library, Local Studies Department and Cllr Walter Burrows. Cllr Burrows and his wife visited the church in the morning and the Mayor of Chesterfield Cllr Paul Stone, his partner Sharon Buxton and the Mayoress Mrs Barbara Watson visited in the afternoon.
Many people came into the church and followed the Discovery Trail organised by the rector, Fr Stephen Jones.
