Former Spireites striker Bob Newton was so upset to see pictures appealing for missing pooch Pixie, he contacted her owner and offered to help.

Bob, a self-professed dog-lover, said: “It kills me knowing somebody has lost their little dog. I love dogs, and I just want to help in any way I can.”

The 57-year-old is offering £250 for anyone who can help find Pixie, who escaped from a gap in the fence at her home on Sycamore Avenue in Boythorpe on February 6.

Owner Nicole Ibbotson said: “I am devastated. I just want to see her back home.

“There have been three sightings of her, but none for about three weeks so I think someone must have taken her in.

“I am hoping someone sees this and comes forward.”

Nicole, 37, who has two eight-year-old twins and a German shepherd puppy, said the sightings were on Walton Road, Tunstall Way and Wallgrove Avenue.
