Residents are being asked whether Buxton’s traditional market should be moved to Spring Gardens.

High Peak Borough Council are currently working to revitalise the traditional twice-weekly market in partnership with traders, town businesses and the public, and are considering moving to a new location in the lower part of the town.

Councillor Godfrey Claff, executive member for regeneration, said: “We’re all aware of the decline in the market and the talk about moving it to a new home.

“The council is keen to halt this decline and to work with others to make sure our market survives and thrives.

“We’ve listened to what market traders, and some businesses, have told us about the issues related to its current location which is why we’re proposing to move it. But nothing has been decided yet and it’s important that we hear from as many people as possible before we make a final decision.

Questionnaires will be made available to businesses along Spring Gardens and in Higher Buxton in the coming weeks and members of the public will also be invited to have their say. Further details of how people can get involved in the consultation will be available soon.
