Children are invited to stake their claim to a royal title as gala organisers launch their annual hunt for six very special figureheads.

The Friends of Eastwood Park Committee will be holding a selection day for any child wishing to enter for one of their 2012 royalty titles. The event will be held at Hasland Village Hall from 1.30pm.

Anyone wishing to see what would be involved with being part of Hasland’s royalty is invited along to the 2011 Gala Royalty’s Court of Queens on Saturday, March 10. This event will be visited by many royalty from all over Derbyshire and will take place at the village hall from 1pm.

Any child who either attends school or has a parent/guardian living within the village of Hasland is eligible to enter for one of the following titles:

Gala Queen - age 13+,

Gala Junior Queen - age 11 or 12,

Gala Princess - age 8 - 10,

Gala Rosebud - age 5 - 7,

Gala Petal - age 3 or 4,

Attendant or Pageboy - age 4+.

Claire Walker, royalty organiser for the committee, said: “A lot of people think that being part of carnival royalty is like taking part in an American beauty pageant, but I would like to stress that it is not. Taking part in the carnival circuit is more about building a child’s confidence in themselves, having fun and raising money for very worthwhile causes.

“Being a part of the Hasland royalty does not cost a fortune, as we have a lot of contacts to help us keep prices reasonable.

“We also only ask that the children attend some of the other towns/villages events throughout the year, which means that it doesn’t take up the family’s whole year.

“Last year we were very disappointed not to receive any entrants from the older girls wishing to be Gala Queen. We understand that they may not think it is ‘cool’ to take part, but they may be surprised by how much they enjoy themselves and I would say just give it a try.”

Shannon Winters, Hasland Gala Princess in 2010, was honoured to be chosen as Princess of Derbyshire last year and will now get to represent Hasland and the county of Derbyshire at events from 2011/2012.
