Safety checks can save lives

Have your say

Perform safety checks on your vehicle before long journeys – that’s the message from Derby and Derbyshire Road Safety Partnership after a survey revealed that many drivers are failing to take basic precautions.

The research by road safety charity Brake and insurance company Direct Line revealed that:

- 39 per cent of motorists set off on long journeys without checking the condition and pressure of their tyres

- 41 per cent of motorists fail to check that their lights and indicators are working before a long drive

- 26 per cent of motorists set off on long journeys without checking their oil and water

- 26 per cent of motorists don’t check their washers or wipers before a long drive

Partnership manager Robert Hill said: “Getting ready for a holiday or work trip can be stressful but safety should be your number one priority. Vehicle checks only take a few minutes to perform but they can save lives.”

Robert added: “Planning ahead is another way of reducing risk on long journeys. Check the radio or TV for local travel news and find out about congestion on the national strategic road network by visiting the Highways Agency website.”
