Rotarians present dictionaries to Matlock school children

A community group has helped youngsters with their literacy by providing them with dictionaries.

The Rotary Club of Matlock gave final year students at seven junior schools around the area the books at the end of term.

Former Rotary president Cynthia Machent and Rotarian Diane Blount presented 156 rotary dictionaries to students at All Saints, Darley Dale, Castle View, Churchtown, Matlock Bath, St Giles and St Joseph’s junior schools.

The dictionaries are part of the worldwide Rotary International initiative to improve literacy and numeracy.

Cynthia said she was delighted at the reception given to her and Diane by the teaching staff and pupils at the schools.

She added: “Books still have a place in this internet age and these excellent Osborne Illustrated Dictionaries were well received by the students.

“You can open them at any page and find something new or use them in the conventional way and get a clear definition and spelling.

“I am sure that the students will treasure these for a long time to come.”
