THE FOUNDER of Blake Holdings Motor Group has died at his home in Spain after suffering with a short illness.

Peter Blake, 89, will be remembered for starting the business 60 years ago at its original Staveley base. He and his wife Joyce bought and converted a derelict site and sold sweets and petrol and initially lived in a caravan.

The business became successful and represented Vauxhall for over 40 years in North Derbyshire. More sites were acquired including one at Chatsworth Road, Chesterfield.

After Mr Blake’s retirement in 1987, nephew David Merifield developed the business into a £60m turnover multi-franchise. It was sold to Vertu Motors in 2007.
