THE CONSERVATIVE MP for the Derbyshire Dales is to become Transport Secretary in a Government Cabinet reshuffle organised by Prime Minister David Cameron.
Patrick McLoughlin has been replaced as Chief Whip by International Development Secretary Andrew Mitchell, after an announcement on Monday, but he has been rewarded with the high profile position in transport.
As Chief Whip, his role was to persuade MPs to attend debates and vote in line with the party but he now replaces Transport Secretary Justine Greening.
He said: “I’m very happy. I’ve been in the Whip’s office for a long time and have been Chief Whip for seven years so it’s high time to have a change.”
The reshuffle – which is the first major restructuring since the Coalition Government came to power in 2010 – forms part of a bid to restore confidence. Mr McLoughlin said he felt very positive and excited about the future.
