A FORMER Premier League referee visited Chesterfield College to introduce a new generation to the game.
Uriah Rennie, was at the college’s Clowne campus to launch a new Referee Academy.
Over 25 students have signed up to the programme so far.
Sports lecturer Neil Cluxton said there was a shortage of referees in the area and the programme aimed to get more youngsters involved.
He added: “Uriah was great. He’s an ex student so he came back to talk to the children and give them one or two pointers.
“Young people often get a bad press but we’ve got a lot of characters at the college who do get involved in voluntary work and we want to see if we can get them in to refereeing too.
“This may be the start of a very successful refereeing career for some.”
The programme complements football academies which place young people back into the game, while they gain qualifications.
It is hoped that students will gain a refereeing qualification which will allow them to officiate games locally and earn valuable experience.
