OVER 50 cyclists are preparing to ride out on the Derbyshire Times and Polaris Apparel 50 mile Flagg Challenge to raise thousands of pounds for Chesterfield’s Ashgate Hospice.

The Flagg cycle challenge, which starts from 9.30am, on Sunday, at Ashgate Hospice, on Ashgate Road, Chesterfield, has attracted riders from all over the country as well as kind-hearted volunteer marshals and supporters who have all stepped in to ensure this inaugural event goes smoothly.

Derbyshire Times editor James Mitchinson said: “Months of planning by ourselves, Dronfield’s Polaris bikewear and Ashgate Hospice promises to make this a great day for cyclists, supporters and all those who turn up to see off their family and friends.”

Supporters will also be able to enjoy the carnival atmosphere before the sponsored cyclists set off with raffles to win a quality Sram bicycle donated by Graham Snodden of Sram and Sky’s the limit books donated by Harper Collins publishers.

Emmerdale TV Soap Star Rik Makarem, of Chesterfield, also hopes to see the riders off at the start and as an experienced cyclist he is hoping to join them on what is expected to be a tough ride with some difficult climbs.

The route will take in Baslow, Ashford-in-the Water, Flagg, Stanton-in-the-Peak and Edensor and finishes back at the hospice.

Places are available for charity riders. For entry, sponsor forms and a map contact the hospice fundraising team on (01246) 567250 or email emily.evans@ashgatehospice.nhs.uk. Entry costs £20 and cyclists will get a Polaris goody bag, free DT newspaper and refreshments at the finish.
