Children at Darley Churchtown CofE Primary School have recently completed a mammoth reading marathon, raising an incredible amount of money to spend on new books for their classrooms and library.

The Reading Marathon took place over a three-week period, ending on February 24.

Last Thursday, on World Book Day, local Usborne organiser Beth O’Donovan, who jointly organised the event alongside the school literacy coordinator Laura Hayes, presented the children with certificates, medals and prizes and revealed the incredible amount raised of £444.

Beth added a further £133 to the school’s total, boosting the total to £577 to spend on books.

The children were set a target of either 100 or 200 minutes depending on their age, and all children who met their target where awarded with a certificate from Usborne and a medal.

Each class ran a competition to see how many different people they could read to and how many minutes they cold read. With impressive totals like 12 and a half hours of reading and 36 people read to, the children received prizes donated by Usborne and the school Parent Teacher Association.
