PYE HILL: Male voice choir joins forces with Chiaro Di Canto Choir for concert

Following a recent successful concert at Ripley All Saints Church, the Pye Hill & District Male Voice Choir performed in a joint concert with the Chiaro Di Canto Choir at St John the Evangelist Church, Nottingham Road, Ilkeston on Saturday, July 13.

Both choirs were conducted by Christine Buxton in an evening of musical contrast.

The Pye Hill and District Male Voice choir performed 76 Trombones, Bright Eyes, I Believe, Love Changes Everything, Magic Moments, And I Love You So, Catch a Falling Star, Try to Remember, Pedro the Fisherman with Solo highlights by Frank Akers, My Lord What a Morning’, Unchained Melody, The Rose, Every time I Feel the Spirit, Red Morning and Speed Your Journey. Solos were provided by baritone Dave Braithwaite who sang ‘Vincent’ and first tenor Colin Dutton who sang Watching the Wheat. The choir was accompanied by Rosemary Jones on piano and Dave Gibbon for solo performances.

The Chiaro di Canto Ladies Choir provided contrast to the evening by Georgina Jones and June Wheatley singing the duet If I Can Help Somebody. The full choir performed, Donna Nobis, I Will Follow Him, All Things Bright and Beautiful, Sing a Song of Sixpence, Silent Worship, I Will Sing With the Spirit and A Gaelic Blessing. Further duets were performed by Hayley Hibbard and Jen Adams who sang Where’er You Walk, Sara Simpson-Eyre and Jen Adams singing Spring. Solo performances were given by Sarah Simpson-Eyre who sang Moon Fall, Hayley Hibberd who sang I Dreamed a Dream’ and Rebecca Knight who sang In Haven and Hans und Greth. Chiaro di Canto were accompanied by Glennys Skidmore on piano.

Joint items performed at the end of each session with rousing audience participation were Jerusalem and You’ll Never Walk Alone.

The undoubted highlight of the concert was the first public performance by first tenor George Bowley who sang Stars from Les Miserables.

An invitation has been extended to join the Pye Hill & District Male Voice Choir, which practices at the Dale Club, Jacksdale, on Mondays at 7.30pm. No audition required.
