Pupils’ starry sleepover is a big hit

Pupils were treated to a moonlight lesson when they had an astronomical sleepover at their school.

The 60 Whitecotes Primary pupils from years four and five embarked on their stargazing night on Saturday, thanks to astronomer Steve Ibbotson.

Steve brought his mobile planetarium to the Chesterfield school and gave a presentation of night sky images.

The children did other space themed activities, had supper and watched a film, complete with popcorn before settling down for the night in sleeping bags in their classrooms.

The next morning Breakfast was followed by a few games in the hall before they were collected.

Teacher Sarah Palmer, who organised the sleepover, said: “It was a pleasure to work with the children in such an informal way. Though very excited the children responded excellently to all that was asked of them. They are a credit to the school.”

The children agreed it was a great idea and thought the planetarium was ‘magical’.
