A new pub will no longer be built at a prominent Chesterfield site after the plan was dropped.

However, Perrys Motor Sales still intends to build a new Ford car dealership at the location opposite the Alma Leisure Park off Derby Road.

If a planning application is approved and the development takes place, 120 staff currently based at the Ford dealership on Chatsworth Road and service centre on Barker Lane will relocate to the new site.

The proposed move promises to create 30 new jobs.

The planning application, submitted on behalf of Perrys Motor Sales, states: "The site provides an ideal location due its position by one of the principal routes into the town, enabling the car sales to be visible.

"This is a critical commercial requirement of the development and why the site provides an ideal location."

The development proposes the construction of a new car showroom with an 18 bay workshop, a separate valet building, associated offices and staff parking.

Over the last few months, excavators have been carrying out work to prepare the land.

A spokesman for Henry Boots Development, which is responsible for the site, said: "We've been carrying out infrastructure and levelling works and these are mostly complete."

In addition, Henry Boot Developments is in the process of installing lighting and CCTV around the skate park area close to the proposed car dealership.

The projects are part of the wider redevelopment of Spire Walk.

Fronting the A61, Spire Walk is situated on the former Bryan Donkin Valves manufacturing site and includes a range of facilities, including retail, office buildings and Chesterfield fire station.

The planned car dealership is the final piece of the jigsaw and concludes the ambitious scheme.
