A MUCH-LOVED outdoor heated swimming pool reopened on Saturday following a major facelift.
Hathersage Swimming Pool, on Oddfellows Road, is open for business as usual after being spruced up in time for the summer – and its 75th anniversary in July.
The 33-yard pool basin, which was damaged by harsh winter frosts each year, has been relined with fibreglass in a project costing about £80,000.
Councillor Dave Jackson, of Hathersage Parish Council, which owns and manages the site and pulled together funding for the revamp, said: “A lot of people turned out for the reopening on Saturday – despite the weather. There is a lot of excitement in Hathersage.
“We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone involved in the facelift – but this is just phase one of a programme that will see further works,” he added.
The popular pool, which closed in September, usually opens at the end of March – but this year’s opening was delayed as the much-needed refurbishment, which guarantees the long-term future of the attraction, had to be carried out during April and May.
To compensate for the late opening, the season is being extended by a couple of weeks until October 2.
Opened in 1936, Hathersage Swimming Pool, which is heated to 28°C, attracted more than 36,000 customers last year.
It will be 75-years-old on July 25 and bosses are organising celebrations to mark the occasion.
