Police hunt distraction burglars

A BOGUS cleaner conned his way into a woman’s home before he and an accomplice fled with a purse.

The offender called at the home of the 42 year-old woman, on Dumbles Road, Bolsover, about 5pm, on Sunday, May 15, and he was allowed inside after he asked for a glass of water.

A police spokesman said: “The man initially knocked at the woman’s window and claimed to be an industrial cleaner and offered to clear rubbish from her garden.

“Even though the woman said no to the offer she let him into her kitchen for a glass of water and later discovered her purse had been stolen.”

Police told how the woman became suspicious when the offender wrapped a piece of his coat round the glass to prevent leaving finger prints and it is believed an accomplice snatched the purse while the man was drinking.

The bogus cleaner was described as 5ft 11ins tall, aged in his 30s, clean shaven and was wearing a beige jacket and jeans.

Witnesses should call Derbyshire Constabulary on 0345 123 3333 or Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111.
