Planner throw out Crich nuclear tip housing proposal

The proposal for a housing development on a site off Roes Lane, Crich, was put forward by Gladman Developments in May this year.

However residents raised concerns that the houses would be located within very close proximity to Hilts Quarry, which was used for a number of years by Rolls Royce for dumping low–level nuclear waste.

Prime Minister David Cameron was evening involved in the debate, after Crich resident and campaigner Patrick Cooke wrote to him about his concerns.

In a report by Amber Valley Borough Council the reason for the application being refused was that it did not meet planning criteria.

The report stated: “The scale and location of the proposals are not in accordance with the advice as contained in the National Planning Policy Framework with regard to development in rural areas being responsive to local circumstances and reflecting the local need for housing.

“It is not considered that it has been demonstrated that this development is required to enhance or maintain the vitality of Crich or any other rural communities in the locality.”
