Snow and freezing temperatures have heaped more misery on High Peak commuters.

Schools across the High Peak were shut on Friday as overnight snowfall, coupled with strong winds, resulted in difficult driving conditions for early-morning commuters.

More significant snowfall and blizzard conditions into the evening brought parts of Buxton to a standstill, with reports of some drivers being forced to abandon their vehicles.

As of 9pm, Derbyshire County Council reported the following road closures: A53 Buxton to Leek; A54/A537 Cat and Fiddle Buxton to Macclesfield; A57 Snake Pass; A6024 towards Holme Moss; B6105 onto Woodhead Pass; B5047 Whaley Bridge to Macclesfield.

A Met Office amber warning for snow in the East Midlands remains in force until 6am on Saturday, with accumulations of 20cm-40cm possible on high ground and 10cm-15cm at lower levels.
