Fire crews were called to All Saints’ Church on Lower Road, Mackworth, just after 4.30pm today, Thursday, December 3.

Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service said shortly before 6pm this evening that there were six fire engines at the scene.

The fire service shared this dramatic photo, showing flames lighting up the night sky as firefighters attempt to douse the blaze, as it asked people to avoid the area.

In an update issued at 7.45pm, it said firefighters remained at the scene, where they were ‘damping down’, and that they would be ‘working into the night’.

"A joint fire investigation with Derbyshire Police will commence tomorrow,”added the fire service in a tweet.

“Our thoughts are with the community and congregation of All Saints’ Church Mackworth who will understandably be devastated by this fire.”
