PEAK DISTRICT: Mountain Challenge to support WaterAid project

In its 21st year, the Mountain Challenge is offering teams the chance to walk 10, 20 or 30 miles in the Peak District.

Starting at Hope Valley College, teams travel across the Dark Peak area, enjoying spectacular views and exhilarating inclines before descending back to Edale College for refreshments and a prize giving ceremony.

The challenge takes place on Saturday July 12, 2014, so there is plenty of time to get fit.

Teams are made up of three-to-six walkers who must aim to raise at least £200 or more.

Those who sign up before the end of March can take advantage of an ‘Early Bird’ offer, which means that registration is just £20 per person before April 1, 2014. After that, it’s £25 per person.

Severn Trent Water’s community and volunteering manager, Leanne Town, said: “We’re asking motivated teams to make a great start to 2014, by signing up to take part in our Mountain Challenge.

“The money raised for WaterAid will help people in Ethiopia, who struggle to get access to clean, fresh, drinking water because it is one of the poorest countries in the world.

“The Mountain Challenge continues to raise a huge amount of money for this deserving cause. In 2013, teams raised over £40,000 and the challenge has raised more than £500,000 since it started, helping more than 33,000 people take their first steps out of poverty.

“We’re hoping to make 2014 the biggest year yet. As part of this, we’re awarding trophies to the fastest teams whose members each raise at least £21 on their personal WaterAid fundraising pages before Sunday 6 July 2014. So we’d encourage people to sign up as soon as possible to start raising money before the big day.”

By taking part in the Severn Trent Water Mountain Challenge, the money raised will help to fund projects that provide clean, safe water close to people’s homes and a hygienic place to go to the toilet.
