Peak artists shine in Derbyshire competition

Peak artists stole the show at this year’s Derbyshire Open, winning half of the ten prizes on offer.

The 32nd annual art competition invited both amateurs and professionals to capture aspects of life and landscape in the county.

More than 250 entries were considered by judges and 102 were selected for an exhibition at Buxton Museum and Art Gallery, on Terrace Road, which runs until September 5.

Jamie Ebdon, of Buxton, and Susan Johnson, of Padfield, both won Derbyshire County Council awards for their pieces Dome is Where the Heart Is and Vera Brittain at the Devonshire Hospital respectively.

Ten-year-old Joss Abbs-Brown, of Hayfield, was awarded the Derbyshire County Council young artist prize for A Peaceful Morning in the Pavilion Gardens.

While 18-year-old Fergus Carmichael, of Foolow, was given the Munro Trophy for his work Derbyshire Grit and Jeff Perks, of Cressbrook, was presented with the Friends sculpture prize for his entry How to Make Fine Furniture.

Four out of the ten submissions commended were also by High Peak talent, namely Woman and Bird by Veronica Snook, of Tunstead Milton; Buxton Museum by Nina Calladine, of Buxton; By Gotham Curve by Adrienne Brown, of Buxton; and Twenty Trees Towards Chinley Churn by Lyndon Evans, of Little Hayfield.
