PARENTS are campaigning for safety measures outside a pre-school after an accident and several near-misses.

Newbold Parish Church Pre-school handed Cllr Tony Rogers a petition calling for signs to reduce traffic speeds outside its premises.

Cllr Rogers said the campaign was launched after a 16-year-old girl was knocked down outside the pre-school and a mother walking with her child had her handbag knocked off her shoulder by a car.

He added: “Parents and the manager at the school have been concerned for a long time about the speed of traffic outside the school.

“I’m hoping a survey will be done on every nursery school where there is a threat and a danger from traffic.

“We would like to see a 20-mile-an-hour speed limit and warning signs.”

Campaigners are now waiting for a response from Derbyshire County Council.

Pre-school manager Susan Roberts said: “We feel that this is an issue of high importance.

“Our petition is not only for our pre-school and our children and parents’ safety, but for other pre-schools which are in built up areas that need signs stating that they are there.”
