Parents anger over Hady Primary path floods

More than a foot of water lines the only pathway from Hady Lane to Hady Primary School, meaning parents are forced to carry children as old as eleven across the 200 metre stretch, as the water floods their wellingtons.

Mum-of-two Kelly Bannister – who has started a petition to present to Derbyshire County Council – said the water is even high enough to run into adult wellingtons.

“It is a nightmare” she said. “I have a two and four year old, and it makes it so difficult when you have to navigate the water with two that age.

“There has been bad weather recently, but this has been going on for years. I have a cousin who experienced it when she went to Hady, and she is 21 now.”

She added: “You can’t walk through it without getting soaked. The only other option is to walk to the other side of Spital, which will add 35 minutes at least on to the journey. It’s not really an option.”

The petition already has over 200 signatures from parents hoping the path – which is part owned by the council and part the Highways Agency – will be cleared.

A spokesperson for the council said: “We are aware of flooding on this footpath and appreciate parents’ concerns.

“Although the severe and prolonged wet weather is hampering our efforts at the moment we are currently working with other landowners to find a solution as soon as possible.”
