ORGANIST Darryl Atkin has been honoured for half a century of service to a north-east Derbyshire church.

Darryl, of Boughton Lane, Clowne, was presented with a card and a gift by Clowne Methodist Church council secretary, Susan Melbourne, at a candlelit carol service. Miss Melbourne also presented Darryl’s wife Jean with a flower arrangement.

Darryl was 13 when he was asked if he could play the organ, having played for the church’s Sunday School. The then organist, Edison Jones, showed him the basics and allowed Darryl to play the occasional hymn on a Sunday morning until he had mastered the instrument and went solo, taking his first service one Sunday evening.

Darryl, a retired electrical engineer, also plays at Chesterfield crematorium.
