Vic Hawksworth, 61, of Calow, said: “I’ve been coming here for over 40 years and this pub is the cornerstone of the village. It’s despicable that it’s closing after all this time.

“We put up a good fight to stop it happening, but your everyday man can’t take on the likes of Tesco.”

David Easto, 61, of Calow, said: “There were 2,400 people signed the petition opposing Tesco moving in – that’s most of the adults who live here!”

Peter Rawson, 51, of Calow, said: “Tesco aren’t supposed to redevelop successful pubs, which is exactly what this is. Everyone is heartbroken that the pub is closing.”
