THE Olympics will leave a lasting legacy across Derbyshire with the unveiling of 11 milestone markers.
The engraved milestones will be placed in nine towns and villages which were part of the torch relay route in Derbyshire.
The locations include Glapwell, Bolsover, Calow, Chesterfield, Matlock, Darley Dale and Bakewell an an additional marker will be placed at Highfields School in Matlock.
Derbyshire County Council’s cabinet member for culture Andrew Lewer said: “The Olympics have been a proud moment for the UK and for our county.
“We want to celebrate the incredible achievements of everyone involved and also leave a permanent reminder of the Olympics here in Derbyshire,” he added.
The markers will be unveiled by Derbyshire Olympic torchbearers on September 9 to coincide with the closing ceremony of the 2012 Paralympics Games.
The stones have been designed and carved by local stone mason Andy Oldfield.
Funding has come from a number of authorities including Arts Council England.
