A former refuse collector has been named the new mayor of Alfreton for the forthcoming year, his fourth term.
At the town council’s annual meeting, John Walker was elected to takes the chains for 2013-14.
John, originally from South Normanton, has been a resident in the town for the past 40 years.
He is a well know figure in the town, he worked as a refuse collector for Alfreton Urban District Council from 1967 and remained with Amber Valley Borough Council when it was formed in 1974.
After his retirement from Amber Valley in 1998 John became a borough councillor for the town in 2002. He has served as mayor on three previous occasions in 1992/3, 1996/7,and 2003/4. The deputy mayor is Coun Marlene Bennett MBE.
Coun Walker told members that he is keen make sure that the town’s railway station provides a thorough service to the local community and that the train operators carry out the promised work to the booking office and the access for people with disabilities.
His charity for the year is the local branch of Diabetes UK.
