PROGRESS to transfer the ownership of Wirksworth Swimming Pool to a charitable business is now well underway, and took another pace forward this week with the appointment of a new Pool Manager, Glyn Booth.
Glyn, formerly the owner manager of The Swim School Chesterfield has considerable experience of pool management, and previously ran the largest independent swimming programme in Derbyshire.
Glyn said of his appointment “I am delighted to take up the challenge of developing the services and facilities at Wirksworth pool.
I’m under no illusions about the amount of work required to bring the pool up to standard, and I’d ask the community to work with myself and the new trustees while we manage the hand-off from Derbyshire Dales District Council (DDDC). Over the coming months you will see improvements both to the building and service levels. We can only make small steps at a time, but hopefully all in the right direction.
I know a number of parents who use Wirksworth for swimming lessons have expressed concerns about whether the swim programme will continue once the pool is outside DDDC control. I can assure everyone it certainly will, and we will be contacting users in the next couple of months with details of the post Easter programme.
Wirksworth pool lends itself perfectly for teaching, and I want to give local children lessons that put the emphasis back into building confidence and technical excellence. The key to developing strong little swimmers is for them to have quality, consistent and continuous swimming lessons.
Over the next few months I will be working with the Trustees to appointment instructors and support staff to ensure we can deliver an excellent programme.”
A spokesperson for the Wirksworth Swimming Pool Trustees comments: “We are really fortunate to have secured Glyn’s services. The new team of pool trustees each have skills to help the pool develop, but Glyn has the experience and reputation for delivering exceptional swimming programmes. He is also a qualified aquafit instructor and has extensive knowledge of pool maintenance and management. We look forward to working with him.”
Wirksworth Swimming Pool is currently operated by DDDC but is set to be transferred to Wirksworth Swimming Pool, a charitable business being established to run the facility, after Easter this year. It is anticipated the pool will need to close for a short period over the Easter holidays for essential maintenance before opening again during April.
