MORE than 1,000 people turned out to the opening of Chesterfield Canal Trust’s home.
Boat trips, water fun, stalls and displays celebrated Hollingwood Hub on Saturday. The trust now has a home, after 35 years, in the revamped lock house.
The ceremony was attended by a host of dignitaries and similar crowds turned up the following day.
Chairman of the Ttrust, Robin Stonebridge, said: “The weekend could not have gone better. The huge crowds and enthusiasm shown here demonstrate the desire of local people to see the full restoration of the Chesterfield Canal.
“We welcome the support of all our partners in our determination to see that wish fulfilled.”
The derelict Hollingwood Lock House, on Works Road in Chesterfield, has been restored and extended.
It comprises Nona’s Coffee Shop, a meeting room for hire and offices for the Trust and the Chesterfield Canal Partnership.
The meeting room is available for hire and catering and boat trips can be provided.
