Chesterfield MP Toby Perkins has revealed his pride in representing a town that, despite the economic downturn, appears to be bucking the trend according to a recent survey.

He was speaker at a meeting of the Inner Wheel Club of Chesterfield where members were informed that Chesterfield Borough Council does not have vacant shops to let and that the few empty premises were privately owned.

Mr Perkins spoke of the exciting developments in the planning stages examples of which were the Northern Gateway Development, Chesterfield Waterside and the Walton Works Site.

When members pondered the need for yet another supermarket in the town, Mr Perkins’ view was that there are many small vibrant, family and smaller businesses in Chesterfield selling specialist items which supermarkets do not stock and that our market is a perfect example of this being valuable asset to our friendly and vibrant historic market town.

He emphasised the need to keep Chesterfield vibrant as the aim is for Chesterfield to be one of the largest towns for local people and visitors aided by its close proximity to the Peak District.

Mr Perkins went on to offer members a tour of The Houses of Parliament.
