Model man shows ships

editorial image

editorial image

This happy model maker decided to turn ship builder upon retirement.

Frank Jackson, of Darley Dale, is shown in this photograph proudly displaying some of his finest model ships.

The picture was taken for the Matlock Mercury by Ron Duggins in 1984.

The 65–year–old too up the hobby after retiring from his job as an engine driver.

Frank’s father had been a naval lieutenant and his uncle worked for Cunard Lines, so a love of the sea was already in his blood.

Without any previous experience of model boat building, Frank set to work making models of historic ships such as the Mary Rose and Nelson’s flagship, Victory.
