THE BIG chill struck this week but Derbyshire residents have been enjoying an unusually mild and sunny winter.

Temperatures last month reached double figures, snowdrops were spotted in Bolsover and the frost kept away.

The Met Office confirmed the average temperature for Derbyshire for December 2011 was 5 degrees centigrade with only 5.7 frost days compared with minus 0.8 degrees and 22 frost days in December 2010. But the Met Office said the region’s warmest recorded December enjoyed an average of seven degrees in 1974.
