Mrs Latham delivered a speech in the House of Commons in a debate on traffic speed outside the school. She secured the debate after visiting the school and listening to staff, parents and pupils’ calls for something to be done about traffic going past the school at speed as children tried to cross the road.

Mrs Latham said: “I knew a debate was vital to ensure something is done before a child is killed trying to get to school.”

She highlighted a survey in June that recorded 85per cent of traffic travelling above the speed limit between 8am and 9am. Mrs Latham has called for a speed limit of 20mph outside the school and an extended 30mph hour zone up to the school, better signage and stronger speed limit enforcement. MP Andrew Jones, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Transport, backed the campaign including Mrs Latham’s call for school route audits. Mr Jones aims to write to Derbyshire police.
