Matlock Bath car death man still had seat belt on

The body of Stephen Lythgoe was discovered in a black Chrysler PT Cruiser at the base of High Tor, in Matlock Bath, on the morning of Monday, June 2.

The family of the 65–year–old, of Church Street, Matlock, last saw him at 8pm the previous evening.

Speaking during the opening of Mr Lythgoe’s inquest at Chesterfield coroner’s court, PC Deanna Hyde said: “He hadn’t been seen by his family after that time.

“The information we have received was that a local dog walker just before 7.45am saw tyre tracks in the long grass at the top of High Tor.”

She added: “It wasn’t unusual for Mr Lythgoe to be out in the evenings. Sometimes he did stay out with friends.”

PC Hyde explained that the wrought iron gates at the start of the Alpine walk, which leads to High Tor, were open, however the path is not generally used by cars.

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward and help with the investigation. Call 101 with any information.
