The victim, a 45-year-old man from Dronfield, had left his card in a machine at Natwest, on the Market Place, by mistake on Thursday, September 22.

A 54-year-old man from the Chesterfield area happened to be passing, and noticed the machine still had a card inside. He went over and withdrew cash from the account.

The victim later reported to the bank that cash had been stolen from his account, and the bank checked CCTV before contacting police.

Staff at the bank recognised the offender, who was another customer.

He admitted taking the money and, with the agreement of the victim, is paying back the full amount he stole plus interest. The man is also writing a letter of apology to the victim.

The action was taken under Community Remedy, a scheme set up with the support of the Police and Crime Commissioner, which can be used for lower level crime and anti-social behaviour when the victim does not want the case to go to court or for another formal outcome.

Police Constable Steve O’Callaghan, of the Chesterfield Town Safer Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Thanks to staff at the bank we were quickly able to trace who had stolen the money from the victims account, and we were able to resolve the incident within 24 hours.

“The man was apologetic and fully admitted trying to take an opportunity. With the agreement of the victim, he repaid the full amount plus interest and has also written a formal letter of apology.”

PC O’Callaghan added: “Restorative actions like these can help resolve low level crime and anti-social behaviour to the victim’s satisfaction, without the need to go through the court, and ensure that offenders take responsibility for their actions.”
