An elderly man has died in a house fire in Shirebrook.

Fire crews were called to the house on Park Avenue, on Monday, 2 July.

Neighbours called emergency services at 5.15pm after spotting smoke coming from the house and three fire engines attended.

Two police officers, assisted by an officer from Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service made valiant attempts to rescue the 79-year-old man, named locally as Malc Pittaway.

A full investigation will be carried out.

A spokesman from Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “We would like to express our sympathy to family and friends of the deceased.”

The blaze is not believed to be suspicious.
