POLICE have arrested a man on suspicion of arson after a fire broke out in a function room at a popular Derbyshire hotel.

Fire crews were called to the blaze at Ringwood Hall Hotel, Ringwood Road, Chesterfield when a valance and a pair of curtains were allegedly intentionally set alight in the Portland suite.

The function room - which is frequently used for weddings - was heavily smoke logged when crews from Staveley and Chesterfield fire stations arrived at around 1.50am on Tuesday May 31.

Crews used breathing apparatus and hose reel jets to put out the fire, which didn’t spread to other areas of the hotel.

Police were also in attendance at the scene.

David Seaton, owner of Ringwood Hall Hotel said: “The fire has caused around £25000 worth of damage, but we intend to get it put back to normal in the next seven to ten days.

“We are a large hotel and we take it all in our stride.”

A 36-year-old South Yorkshire man has been arrested for arson with intent to endanger life and has been taken into custody.
