FOUR-YEAR-OLD Millie Wilkinson checked out her grandma’s sunflower as allotment holders threw open their gates to the public.

Millie was among the visitors to the Bolsover Allotment Association’s open day, which was blessed by blue skies and glorious sunshine.

Crowds enjoyed touring the pristine plots at Oxcroft Lane, relaxing with friends and tucking into home-made cakes.

For the allotment holders, the highlight of the day was the presentation of awards for best plots, which went to the following:

Best plot – 1. David and Jane Yates, 2. Brian Hayes, 3. Geoff Woodhead; best newcomer’s plot – 1. Maggie and Steve Bidwell, 2. Brian Burton, 3. Martin Cooper.

The Bartlett children won the prize for the best vegetable animal.

This year’s judge was Mick Reed who was presented with a basket of fresh vegetables, fruit and homemade preserves by allotment-holder Gillian Carter.
