Weather closes schools and causes traffic chaos

Breaking news

Breaking news

Freezing fog and ice has causing traffic chaos around Chesterfield.

Drivers reported long delays during their journeys in to work this morning (Friday, December 14) and emergency services were called to accidents across the area.

A lorry crashed in to a house at 7.30am on Lea Road in Chesterfield.

Fire crews and the highways agency were called and the area has been taped off.

A lorry also overturned at Clowne close to the Van Dyk hotel. No one was injured but the road was closed.

Some schools have also been forced to closed due to ice including Dronfield Junior School, Penny Acres Primary in Holmesfield and Westfield Infant School in Chesterfield.

Schools that have partially closed include Barlow CE Voluntary Controlled Primary School, Henry Bradley Infant School in Chesterfield and Holmesdale Infant School in Dronfield.

Weather experts say the problem was caused by so-called ‘freezing rain’ - when the rain freezes on impact, covering surfaces with ice.

But they say the situation should ease later in the day.
