COUNCIL chiefs are hoping to honour a brave World War One soldier after they learned his name is not featured on their village memorial.

Unstone Parish Council has been told how 22-year-old Private Albert Edward Bull lost his life on July 1, 1916, in Serre, France, around the time of The Battle of The Somme.

Council clerk Karen Howe said: “A lady had visited the French WW1 battlefield area looking for the grave of one of her own relatives when she found Mr Bull’s details and told us all about it.”

Pte Bull, of the 12th Battalion York and Lancaster Regiment was the son of Louis John and Agnes Bull, of The Bungalow, Hundall, at Apperknowle, near Unstone.

The parish council which has taken advice from the War Graves Commission hopes to include Pte Bull’s details on its war memorial, off Crow Lane, and is appealing for any of his relatives to get in touch.

Ms Howe said: “The parish council wants to place Pte Bull’s name on our war memorial and we’d like to hear from any of his relatives so they can be involved.”

Relatives or anyone with any helpful information are urged to call Ms Howe on (01773) 813314 or they can email unstonepc@virginmedia.com with details.
