Winster residents had a blast from the past recently when a group of Second World War soldiers swooped in to ‘liberate’ villagers from German troops.

On Saturday, January 12, Corporal Reid and his platoon of the US Army 1st Infantry Division marched from Peak Rail in Matlock up to Winster to reenact the American’s advancement into Germany in 1945.

The troops, who hail from the Living History Association, camped at the Miners Standard pub on Saturday night before ‘liberating’ the village the following day by clearing all Germans still left.
