Residents are being asked for their views on improvements to Eckington town centre which are being carried out as part of a major sewer upgrade.

North East Derbyshire District Council, Eckington Parish Council and Eckington Development Company are working alongside Yorkshire Water to put together an improvement project for Market Street.

A funding package has been pulled together by the partners to pay for work such as new paving, planters, seating and landscaping – to be carried out after the sewer upgrade is completed this month.

Residents found out more about the scheme at an open day being held at Eckington Civic Centre.

Cllr Pat Kerry, NEDDC’s member with responsibility for the Economy, said: “The sewer upgrade represents a significant upgrade in the town, and we’re taking the opportunity to work together with partners to build extra improvements into the programme.”

Edward Sorfleet, project manager for Yorkshire Water, added: “Yorkshire Water and our contractors, BarhaleWSP, are committed to working with the local community of Eckington to minimise the disruption caused by our flood alleviation scheme over the next nine months.

“We welcome the opportunity to support an initiative to enhance the town centre once this essential sewer upgrade work is complete.”

Yorkshire Water is investing into the extra improvements, Eckington Parish Council has contributed £10,000 and Eckington Development Company – supported by NEDDC – has secured £9,000 from the government’s Portas Pilot initiative.

Enterprise Inns – the company which owns the Duke of York pub on Market Street – has also contributed £3,000 to the scheme.

The £3.4m Yorkshire Water sewer upgrade started in November, and is an essential project to reduce the risk of sewer flooding in the town.

People are invited to pop into the consultation event to find out more and have their say, between 11am to 6pm.
