Van fled after collision
A VAN driver who fled after colliding with lights in a Chesterfield superstore car park was caught on camera.
Tesco security guard Jonathan Wood was on his tea break when he heard a bang and saw some roof lights hanging down.
He then saw a white van drive away and noticed CCTV equipment was also damaged, town magistrates heard.
CCTV footage showed the van hit the lamps. An occupant got out, climbed onto the van roof to inspect the damage and then got back into the vehicle, which drove away.
Sarah Haslam, prosecuting, said driver Mark Revell was traced and he told police he heard a bang and looked but he couldn’t see any damage.
Revell, 25, of Monkwood Road, Dunston, admitted failing to report an accident on June 14. He was cautioned for an offence involving damage in 2007.
The justices fined him £90, with £85 costs, and imposed five penalty points on his licence.
“The car park is underneath Tesco. It’s a high van and he drove it slowly and he heard a loud bang. He got out and looked around but he didn’t see any damage.
“After watching the CCTV in the police station he accepts he should have seen the damage as it was almost in front of him,” said Bob Sowter, for Revell.
