COUNCIL chiefs claim they have been forced to consider the future of three community centres as Government budget cuts are starting to take a grip on local authority finances.

Bolsover District Council confirmed that Community Houses in Bolsover, New Houghton and South Normanton have come under consideration with an assessment of all its services as part of a money-saving review.

A council spokesman said: “We’re among the eight worst affected councils in the country following the Government’s Spending Review funding cuts and we’re having to review all our services and the provision of these Community Houses is part of that, but no decision has been made on whether they will be closed or simply streamlined.

“We’ve held questionnaires to gauge public feedback but it’s wrong to stipulate at this stage that they might close because we feel that is scare-mongering.”

District Cllr Ian Kerr, of The Green Party, is campaigning to keep the centres open and has urged residents to object to any possible closures and has argued that they are especially needed during difficult economic times. He said: “They provide lunch clubs, children’s activities and help for women suffering domestic violence.”
