Unbeaten run Charges on in match draw

An unbeaten run from last season continues for the North Derbyshire Chargers under-16 squad.

The team recorded a well-earned draw against Hull side Cottingham Tigers - both with 26 points - in their first fixture since moving up a division into the Yorkshire Junior Amateur Rugby League Division 2.

Starting with 11 players against the home team’s squad of 16 was always going to be a difficult task.

But an outstanding team effort, punctuated with some inspirational individual performances, enabled the team to recover from early setbacks.

Tigers put early pressure on the Chargers’ defensive line as both sides weighed each other up.

Deadlock was broken on 10 minutes with a try in the corner as the home team made use of their two-man advantage with a successful conversion.

A sin binning for Chargers’ number 9 saw the away team reduced further to 10 men for the next ten minutes and Tigers scored their second try.

But the Chargers fought back, posting their first points with only ten men.

Jake Beech took advantage of slow defending to crash over near the posts on the last tackle, successfully converted by Callum Hallows.

Aaron Wycherley scored and it was converted by Callum Watkins, just before half time.

The second half saw Ryan Banner record his first try of the season. Penalties were awarded against the home team for offside infringements.

An opportunistic try from Luke Walters’ saw Chargers looking to post their first win but Cottingham broke the deadlock.

Tension remained until the end with Callum Hallows adding a try at eight minutes to go.

Spectators’ player of the match was Aaron Wycherley with Matt Bullars coaches’ player of the match.
