AN ALFRETON teacher has appeared in court charged with 21 offences of indecency against 11 females – including eight schoolgirls.

Russell Singleton, 56, is alleged to have abused his position of trust while working at Alfreton Grange Arts College, formerly known as Mortimer Wilson secondary school.

He faces seven charges of sexual activity with a girl while she was aged 15 and 16.

Singleton, of Lawn Close, Heanor, is further accused of 11 counts of taking or making indecent photographs of eight girls aged between 13 and 17 years.

He is also alleged to have committed three offences of voyeurism by recording private acts for sexual gratification relating to images of females aged between 17 and 23 using a toilet or shower on dates between 2005 and last December. The various offences are alleged to have taken place at Alfreton, Heanor and Swanwick.

Singleton entered no pleas at Chesterfield magistrates’ court on Monday.

The justices committed the case to Nottingham Crown Court for a full hearing on March 5.

Singleton was granted conditional bail providing he has no contact with the complainants, current or former Alfreton Grange School female pupils and no unsupervised contact with anyone aged under the age of 18.

The pupils cannot be identified for legal reasons.
