Swine flu confirmed in Derbyshire

Derbyshire's first case of swine flu has been confirmed by health ministers.

No details about the victim or where he or she is from have been released.

The county's director of public health has assured Derbyshire people that the local NHS is prepared for any eventuality and continues to implement its pandemic flu plans in a measured way.

Dr David Black said: "The announcement does not necessarily mean that we will now see a deluge of cases in Derbyshire, although we do expect to see more over the coming weeks.

"Surveillance of potential cases continues and most cases seen so far in the UK have been mild, with people responding well to treatment."

News of the first case followed rigorous testing conducted by the Health Protection Agency.

Dr Black added: "We would like to remind everyone that the best way to prevent the spread of any infections, including possible swine flu, is to observe good hand hygiene at all times.

"Anyone suspecting they may have symptoms of swine flu, which are generally the same as normal seasonal flu, should ring their GP practice or NHS Direct on 0845 4647 to get advice."
